The PSLA Back 2 School Giveaway was held this August and provides a minimum of 7,500 at-risk children in grades K-12 with the back-to school basics that many families struggle to provide each year. We serve Los Angeles and New York annually.
In Los Angeles, we serve the clients and families of Children's Institute, Inc. - PSLA's primary partner. We are grateful for CII's support since day one of our Back2School initiative.
We were thrilled to partner with Jessica Seinfeld's Good + Foundation on the east coast and hosted a joint giveaway on Child Poverty Day in Queens.
Our members and donors support the initiative by sponsoring a child for $10. By providing kids with necessary academic tools we give them a chance to succeed in their educations and in life.
Our annual fundraising event was held February 6, 2016 at the home of Alec Gores and raised over $1m. This back-tie affair honored notable artists and philanthropists in the LA community. Event funds will be used to help bring the arts and therapeutic services to children residing in one of Los Angeles’s most resource challenged communities – Watts. Specifically, proceeds from the 2016 Winter Gala will be allocated to the Building on Success Campaign in Watts which PSLA is $1.5m into a $2.5m commitment. Additionally, the gala raised over $200K in Back 2 School funds which will support over 20K children with their school needs.
The Children's Institute, Inc. Watts Building On Success Campaign
CII is three years into a 7 year, $75 million Comprehensive Campaign whose focus is to build a state-of-the-art Frank Gehry campus in Watts. PSLA is proud to have been one of the first large project donors with a $2.5 million commitment which included funding for the Watts Interim Campus. The building, which has been designed pro-bono by Frank, will will consist of 50,000 square feet of program, community and office space for services such as family support and early childhood education, individual and group therapy, youth development, and more.
Our most recent program was launched due to the generosity of individuals touched by the story of a family with severe needs during this holiday season. Due to the donations of these individuals, The Gores family and our members we are proud to have launched an emergency fund to serve the immediate needs of families in dire situations. This fund will serve one family per month with great needs. By providing basic necessities we allow the family to heal and move forward having a chance at success.
