PSLA was founded in 2011 by Rochelle Gores Fredston, a trustee of Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII) with the goal of raising funds and awareness for CII. PSLA's mission is to make a meaningful impact on thousands of children each year through support of community initiatives in under-served urban cities.
In partnership with local charities, PS Los Angeles raises funds and in-kind goods to serve the needs of at-risk youth affected by violence, poverty and trauma. Via nationally deployed programs such as the annual Back-to-School backpack drive, PSLA provides students with the tools needed to face their academic year.
Additionally, the organization makes financial commitments to vital community projects such as the new Frank Gehry CII campus in Watts. PSLA has touched the lives of over 125,000 children and has raised over $12 million. Through the organization’s ongoing work, PSLA continuously helps to break the cycle and barriers of poverty to help kids grow up and lead healthy productive lives.
